Today I was sitting at work reviewing the "stickiness" of our websites. (Yes, I work in IT designing software among other things.)
Stickiness is the ability of a website to bring you back time and again. For example, MSN.com has new headlines daily to make you check in with them. Those emails that you get to "check back daily" is a simple example of stickiness. (It's a lot more complex then that but you get the idea).
So anyways, I'm sitting at work listening to a discussion of how we could get more people to hit our site. And I remember reading that Jagex brought in a new president from Ebay. Now ebay....ebay has some big time stickiness to it. Heck, there are even Ebay widgets which will constantly check the site for you.
Now I may be wrong but since our Ebay guy has come to Jagex we've had:
Addition of Jade Vine offering daily slayer xp
A daily battlestaff buying window
Daily purchases of pineapples and seaweed
Bork
What did we have before? Bert the Sandman. (you could argue misc but I'm not sure I buy it as a daily should do)
I'm not saying that some of this wasn't in the works before this guy came on board. But it sure seems that a lot of content has been added in the last year that rewards you for logging in daily.
I'm expecting to see more changes that require a daily check-in. Would make sense with Jagex's business model being heavily dependant on ad revenue.

The ad revenue is aimed at the F2p, area, and I am pretty sure all the daily things are for members, correct? How to does their ad revenue build up if the daily visitors can't see the ads?
There's also a banner ad at the top of runescape.com.
And the more people log on, the more they will probably be word of mouth advertising.
I think it also has to do with making rs more "addicting" by giving you these daily things that you feel you "have" to do.

"stickiness" is an Ebay kind of thing: I think that this new 'president' (King Obey) will degrade the game some.
Hopefully not a lot.
